Why this Matters – Let’s Curb the Oil Habit

It’s becoming crystal clear that the U.S. cannot kick the oil habit for a variety of reasons. Robert Bryce of the New York Times for example, say’s “this may all be good politics. But the idea that the United States, the world’s single largest energy consumer, can be independent of the $5 trillion-per-year energy business — the world’s single biggest industry — is ludicrous on its face.” Ok, fair enough Mr. Bryce but its also becoming crystal clear that we need to limit our consummation of oil and here’s why:

* Fossil fuels are limited in supply
* The global demand will outstrip the supply
* Increased cost of oil has a negative effect on our economy

Additionally it’s been said that necessity is the mother of invention. Clearly, there doesn’t seem to be a quick fix or silver bullet anytime soon but that doesn’t mean that we should curb the habit and conserve the supply that we have. Perhaps the president says it best when he says:

“We cannot keep going from shock, when gas prices go up, to trance when they go back down. we can’t when gas prices are high and hit the snooze button when they fall again form the united states of america cannot afford to bet our long-term prosperity, our long-term security on a resource that will eventually run out.
